The Bose Smart Ultra Soundbar (sold in Australia under that name, and in our catalogue as the Smart Soundbar Ultra) is a single-bar Dolby Atmos system that connects to a TV with one cable, either HDMI eARC or optical. Both cables are included, according to Bose Australia and The Good Guys. Bose lists nine speakers in total, including a centre tweeter and two upward-firing dipole speakers, which the brand says "make it feel like your space is filled with sound". Bose also describes two processing features: TrueSpace, which it says separates instruments, dialogue and effects across the room, and AI Dialogue Mode, which Bose claims "automatically balances voice and surround sound for ultra-crisp vocal clarity". These are the brand's descriptions; nobody on our team has heard the unit.
Who it suits
It fits a household that wants a tidy, one-box upgrade for a TV with an eARC port and already streams from phones. Bose lists Apple AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect and Chromecast, plus Bluetooth 5.0, Wi-Fi and built-in Ethernet, and SimpleSync for pairing compatible Bluetooth headphones. Amazon Alexa is built in; Google Assistant control works when a compatible Google device is on the same network, per Bose. Setup and grouping run through the Bose app, and the box includes an ADAPTiQ headset that Bose says optimises the system to your room during setup. Bose does not state Matter or Apple Home support, so anyone building around those should look elsewhere or rely on AirPlay 2 only.
Skip it if you want true rear surround speakers from the start: Bose's product page lists the Bass Module 500 and Bass Module 700 as wireless add-ons, but mentions no dedicated rear speakers for this bar. At 104.5 cm wide and 5.82 cm tall (Bose's figures), it also needs a TV unit wide enough to hold it.
Australian notes and running costs
Bose sells it directly in Australia in Black and Arctic White, and The Good Guys lists the black model as 882963-5110. JB Hi-Fi and The Good Guys both list a one-year manufacturer's warranty; your rights under Australian Consumer Law apply on top of that. Bose's product page mentions no subscription for the core features. It runs from mains power via the included power cord.
Alternatives in our catalogue: the Sonos Beam (Gen 2) is a more compact smart soundbar for smaller rooms; the Sonos Arc is the flagship Sonos bar for households already invested in that ecosystem; and the Sonos Ray is the entry-level Sonos option for a bedroom or second TV.
