Features and specifications in this description are as the brand describes them.
The Echo Dot is a small smart speaker that works with Amazon's Alexa voice assistant. It has improved speaker quality compared to earlier models, delivering clearer vocals and deeper bass, and can play music, podcasts and audiobooks throughout your home. It has a built-in motion detector and temperature sensor, so you can use these to trigger routines—for example, turning on lights when you walk into a room or starting a schedule based on temperature.
You can use it to control compatible smart home devices like light bulbs and smart plugs with your voice. Alexa can help with weather and news updates, timers, reminders, questions and other daily tasks. There's a physical tap control on top to pause music or alarms without speaking. The brand describes Echo Dot as built with privacy protections including a microphone off button and in-app controls to view and delete voice recordings.
This model connects via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. It's designed as a space-saving speaker for any room in your home. The brand does not publish detailed range, battery life or performance specifications.

- Compatible with many smart home brands, but you'll need to check each device supports Alexa control before buying
Research-based: compiled from the manufacturer's information and Australian retailer listings. NXT Smart Home has not tested this product.
Best for: Australian households using Amazon Alexa who want hands-free voice control alongside built-in temperature and motion sensing for smart home automations.
Pros
- Includes built-in ultrasound motion detection and ambient temperature sensors to trigger automated routines.
- Functions as a Matter controller over Wi-Fi, according to Amazon Developer documentation.
- Supports eero built-in mesh Wi-Fi network extension, according to retailer specifications.
- Features physical privacy controls, including a dedicated microphone-off button.
Cons
- Omits the 3.5 mm auxiliary audio input and line-out port, per PCMag Australia.
- Lacks a built-in Zigbee hub and Thread border router, according to SoundGuys and Matter Alpha.
- Does not natively support Apple Home or Google Home platforms.
- Requires continuous mains power with no internal battery option.
The Amazon Echo Dot (5th Gen) is a compact smart speaker measuring 100 mm by 100 mm by 89 mm and weighing approximately 304 grams. It houses a 44 mm front-firing speaker driver designed for voice responses, audiobooks, and music streaming. Powered natively by Amazon’s Alexa platform, the hardware features physical push buttons for volume adjustment, action triggers, and a dedicated microphone-off privacy mute, along with top-tap gesture controls to pause audio or silence timers. It connects using Bluetooth and dual-band Wi-Fi, drawing power continuously via an external 15W DC mains adapter.
Who it suits
This device suits Australian renters and homeowners invested in the Amazon Alexa ecosystem who want room-level voice control without installing separate hardware sensors. With integrated ultrasound motion detection and an ambient temperature sensor, the speaker allows users to build automation routines in the Alexa app, such as turning on lights when presence is detected or activating cooling fans when a room warms up. It also suits homes operating eero mesh networks, as retailer specifications confirm it can act as a Wi-Fi extender for compatible eero setups.
Conversely, it is not suited to households built strictly around Apple Home or Google Home, as neither platform is natively supported. While it operates as a Matter controller over Wi-Fi, it does not include Thread border router capabilities or an onboard Zigbee radio. Buyers looking to route sound through existing external stereo equipment should also take note: PCMag Australia confirms Amazon removed the 3.5 mm auxiliary audio port found on earlier generations.
Australian notes
The Echo Dot (5th Gen) is stocked across Australian retailers, including JB Hi-Fi, The Good Guys, Officeworks, BIG W, and Mobileciti, and carries a 12-month manufacturer warranty.
Connecting to local home networks is handled over dual-band 802.11a/b/g/n/ac Wi-Fi across both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz channels. The unit must stay connected to a standard power point using its supplied 15W (12V / 1.25A) external power adapter. Core smart assistant functions, device controls, and routines require only a free Amazon account, although streaming through services such as Spotify Premium, Apple Music, and Amazon Music Unlimited requires separate paid subscriptions.
