The ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium (model EB-STATE6-01) is an in-wall smart thermostat featuring a 4-inch colour LCD touchscreen with a zinc metal casing. According to ecobee, the unit controls heat pumps, up to two-stage heating and cooling systems, and dual accessories such as humidifiers or dehumidifiers. The manufacturer states that the thermostat incorporates a built-in indoor air quality monitor tracking volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and relative humidity, a radar occupancy sensor, and an integrated speaker and microphone array for audio streaming and voice control.
Who it suits
This thermostat suits homeowners with standard 24-volt central ducted climate systems who want broad platform interoperability. According to ecobee, the unit works with Apple Home, Google Assistant, SmartThings, and Home Assistant, while offering built-in Alexa voice control directly on the thermostat. Users seeking Apple Siri control will need a separate Apple HomePod or HomePod mini connected to the same home network, according to the manufacturer. Those living in rental properties or homes using typical split-system air conditioners should skip this product, as it cannot interface with infrared remote systems or proprietary digital communication bus units without specialised relays.
Australian notes
Ecobee does not maintain an official Australian manufacturer distribution channel or local customer support team. Local stock is sourced through third-party importers and marketplace retailers such as Amazon Australia. Because ecobee's three-year manufacturer warranty is limited to North America, local warranty coverage rests with the importer or retail seller under Australian Consumer Law.
The hardware is built exclusively for 24 VAC low-voltage systems and requires a continuous common wire (C-wire) connection or the use of the included Power Extender Kit. It cannot be connected directly to 240V mains-voltage heating or air conditioning systems. When planning any hardwired climate control alterations, check your state's electrical safety regulator to determine licensing requirements for in-wall wiring work.
On the networking side, ecobee confirms the thermostat supports both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz Wi-Fi connections. Native Matter support is not included. Basic temperature schedules, remote app control, and eco+ energy settings function without added fees, but smoke alarm listening and security alerts require an ongoing ecobee Smart Security subscription, according to the manufacturer.
