The ecobee SmartSensor 2-Pack (model EB-RSHM2PK-01) is a pair of wireless add-on sensors designed to detect ambient room temperature and motion occupancy. Measuring approximately 40 by 40 by 26 millimetres, each battery-powered sensor communicates directly with a compatible ecobee thermostat or camera over a proprietary 915 MHz radio frequency rather than Wi-Fi. According to ecobee, the units help manage uneven heating and cooling throughout the home by averaging temperatures across rooms or prioritising rooms where motion is actively detected. Retailer specifications confirm motion detection covers up to six metres across a 140-degree horizontal and 100-degree vertical field.
Who it suits
These sensors suit Australian homeowners or renters who already operate an ecobee smart thermostat system and want to extend climate management into additional bedrooms, living spaces, or home offices. Because ecobee confirms that basic climate balancing, room scheduling, and occupancy detection operate without an active paid subscription, they fit households looking to manage comfort without recurring costs. The sensors also work well for users managing broader smart home automations through Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Samsung SmartThings, or Home Assistant, as these platforms can receive temperature and occupancy data passed through the paired ecobee thermostat. However, they do not suit households looking for standalone monitors, as they cannot pair directly with standard Wi-Fi, Matter, or general Zigbee and Z-Wave hubs.
Australian notes
ecobee does not officially distribute hardware in Australia or maintain a local regional storefront. Consequently, these sensors are sourced locally through import retailers, meaning ecobee's North American three-year manufacturer warranty does not provide direct Australian warranty backing; repairs or returns rely on the importing retailer. The sensors run on standard 3V CR2477 coin-cell batteries, which ecobee claims provide up to five years of battery life, eliminating any need for mains electrical wiring or plug adaptors. Note that the sensors operate over a 915 MHz sub-GHz frequency to talk directly to your ecobee thermostat, with ecobee specifying up to 18 metres of line-of-sight range. Finally, the units are rated strictly for indoor residential placement and lack weatherproofing, water resistance, and humidity sensing.
