The Google Nest Hub (2nd Gen) is a compact desktop smart display built around the Google Assistant ecosystem. According to Google specifications, the device pairs a 7-inch 1024 × 600 LCD touchscreen with a 43.5 mm full-range speaker, three far-field microphones, and an integrated Soli radar sensor. Because it operates without a physical camera, user interaction occurs through voice commands, touch navigation, or radar-powered Quick Gestures. It serves as a visual control interface for Google Home devices, displays Google Photos albums, streams media from supported services, and monitors bedside rest.
Who it suits
This display suits households invested in Google Home that need a central dashboard to control lights, view connected camera feeds, and check daily schedules. Because Google omitted a camera, the device is well suited to bedrooms and private areas where camera lenses are undesirable. Google notes that its Soli radar tracks sleep stages, ambient light, and breathing movement from a bedside table without requiring wearable trackers. It also suits households building out Matter smart home setups, as Google confirms the display functions as both a Matter controller and a Thread border router.
Buyers who rely on Amazon Alexa or Apple Home should bypass this unit, as it does not natively integrate with competing voice platforms. Users wanting two-way video calling will also find it unsuitable, as the hardware cannot send outbound video feeds. Additionally, Google confirms that long-term access to the Sleep Sensing tool requires a paid subscription after the preview period concludes.
Australian notes
Units distributed through official Australian retailers include a 15 W external power adapter equipped with a standard Australian mains plug and a 1.5-metre cable. For local Wi-Fi networks, the display includes dual-band Wi-Fi 5 capable of connecting to standard 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. It requires continuous mains electricity and does not include an internal battery.
Google provides a one-year consumer hardware limited warranty in Australia, which applies alongside statutory consumer guarantees under the Australian Consumer Law. If you rent or share a home, check your state or territory tenancy guidelines regarding the placement of internet-connected microphone devices in shared areas.
