The Ring Video Doorbell (2nd Gen) is an entry-level smart doorbell offering 1080p HD live video, night vision, and two-way audio with noise cancellation. According to Ring Australia, the device features a 155-degree horizontal and 90-degree vertical field of view, alongside customisable motion detection zones. It functions using an internal rechargeable battery, but it can also connect to compatible existing low-voltage doorbell wiring for trickle charging.
Who it suits
This doorbell suits households already configured around Amazon Alexa, as manufacturer specifications confirm native chime notifications, live view streaming, and two-way talk across compatible Echo devices. It also supports integration into Samsung SmartThings and Home Assistant. Renters may value the battery-powered installation, which avoids compulsory drilling or rewiring when mounted using temporary brackets, though you should check your tenancy agreement regarding external fittings.
Households relying on Apple Home or Google Home should look elsewhere. Ring does not provide native Apple HomeKit or Matter support, and its Google Assistant link is limited to voice commands without video streaming to Nest Hub displays. Because the internal battery is built-in rather than removable, the entire unit must be unmounted using the included security tool whenever it needs recharging via Micro-USB, taking your front-door monitoring offline. Buyers wanting to avoid recurring fees should also note that saving footage and viewing event history requires a paid Ring Protect subscription, as the unit has no local storage options.
Australian notes
According to Ring Australia, the doorbell connects exclusively over 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi (802.11 b/g/n); 5 GHz networks are not supported. If you opt to trickle-charge the battery using hardwiring, Ring states it requires an 8–24 VAC (50/60 Hz, 5VA–40VA) transformer or the official 24VDC plug-in adapter. For mains electrical modifications or hardwired setups, check your state's electrical safety regulator and consult a licensed electrician.
Before mounting a camera facing common areas, footpaths, or neighbouring properties, check relevant state and territory surveillance laws. The product includes a 1-year limited warranty and Ring's theft protection replacement policy, which apply in addition to statutory consumer guarantees under the Australian Consumer Law.
