Aircon Off Universal Air Conditioner Smart Remote

The Aircon Off Universal Air Conditioner Smart Remote (model SMARTREMOTEBASIC) is a dedicated infrared replacement remote designed for split-system air conditioning units. Despite using the "smart" moniker in its branding, this device is a standalone hardware controller rather than a networked smart-home device. Aircon Off states that the remote is compatible with almost all split-system units that use an infrared handset, containing an internal database of brand codes. Its core function is energy management through restriction: the remote lets an owner set and lock maximum heating and minimum cooling temperatures behind a tamper-proof code, preventing occupants from running the air conditioner at inefficient temperature extremes.

Who it suits

This controller is primarily aimed at short-stay accommodation hosts, landlords, commercial office managers, and shared households looking to curb power usage without deploying networked equipment. According to Aircon Off, standard reverse-cycle split systems consume significantly more electricity when occupants dial cooling down to 18°C or drive heating up to 30°C. By locking the allowable temperature boundaries—preset at 21°C to 30°C for cooling and 17°C to 23°C for heating, with customisation available—owners can maintain reasonable comfort bands.

It also suits anyone needing a direct replacement for a lost or broken split-system remote who prefers a conventional physical keypad. However, smart-home enthusiasts looking for remote access, geofencing, phone app management, or voice commands should skip this device. It does not connect to home Wi-Fi and offers no integration with platforms like Google Home, Apple Home, Amazon Alexa, or Home Assistant.

Australian notes

Aircon Off is an Australian company focusing on energy-reduction accessories for air conditioners. Because the remote operates via infrared signals and is powered by AAA batteries, it requires no 240V wiring or electrical trade work.

For investment properties, landlords should check with their state or territory residential tenancy authority before restricting how tenants use heating and cooling. The unit includes an adhesive or screw-mounted wall bracket to keep the handset in sight beside reverse-cycle split units, which are standard fixtures across Australian suburban homes and apartments. Setup involves either entering a brand code from the provided manual or running an automated infrared search cycle until the indoor head unit responds.
