The Aqara Smart Lock U100 is a battery-powered smart deadbolt constructed from zinc alloy and rated to ANSI/BHMA Level 3 standards. According to Aqara's product specifications, it provides multiple ways to unlock, including Apple Home Key tap-to-unlock, a biometric fingerprint scanner, an anti-peeping backlit keypad, Aqara NFC cards, and physical mechanical keys. The unit runs on four included AA alkaline batteries, which Aqara rates for up to eight months of typical use, and features a USB-C port on the bottom of the exterior escutcheon to supply temporary backup power if the batteries deplete.
Who it suits
This lock primarily suits Apple-centric households wanting the convenience of Apple Home Key. Owners can tap an iPhone or Apple Watch against the outer panel to unlock the door without unlocking the phone or launching an app. It is also well suited to households that prefer local biometric entry, as the fingerprint reader operates directly on the hardware. In addition, users who manage guest access benefit from local PIN generation without paying a monthly subscription fee.
However, households looking for a simple swap on typical Australian residential doors may want to reconsider. The U100 is designed to replace single-cylinder American-style deadbolts with a 60 mm or 70 mm backset and door thickness between 35 mm and 55 mm. If your home has a standard Australian mortise lock or an integrated lever-latch assembly, installing this unit will require structural modifications or filling previous cutouts. Renters should check their tenancy agreement and obtain landlord permission before modifying door hardware, as changing locks may be restricted under local tenancy regulations.
Australian notes
Retail listings at Australian stockists, including JB Hi-Fi and Bunnings, list the U100 with a 12-month manufacturer warranty. The lock itself does not include built-in Wi-Fi; it communicates exclusively via Bluetooth 5.0 and Zigbee 3.0. To access the lock remotely, view real-time logs while away, or connect to Google Home, Amazon Alexa, or Samsung SmartThings, you must pair it with a compatible Aqara Zigbee hub, which connects via 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. Apple Home users can achieve remote control using an Apple Home hub (such as an Apple TV or HomePod) over Bluetooth. While the external keypad carries an IP65 rating against rain and dust, the interior panel is not weather-rated and must remain protected from external weather exposure.
