The August Wi-Fi Smart Lock (4th Gen) is an interior retrofit smart lock that replaces the thumbturn of an existing deadbolt while keeping your exterior lock hardware and keys intact. Measuring 72 mm in diameter and 46 mm deep, it connects directly to local 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi networks without requiring an external bridge. August states that the unit is powered by two CR123A lithium batteries and includes an external DoorSense sensor to detect whether the door is open or closed. According to the manufacturer, features including remote locking, virtual guest access, and activity logs do not require an ongoing subscription.
Who it suits
This unit suits homeowners and occupants who want app-based control and ecosystem integrations while preserving physical keys on the outside of the door. Because the exterior hardware remains untouched, it appeals to households that need external key access to remain standard. Renters may also consider it because it does not change how the lock looks from outside; even so, check your lease and your state or territory tenancy authority before modifying door hardware. Anyone wanting built-in keypads or fingerprint access should look elsewhere or budget for separate add-on accessories.
Australian notes
Door compatibility is the primary consideration for Australian buyers. According to August, the lock is designed specifically for standard single-cylinder deadbolts. It is incompatible with double-cylinder deadbolts (keyed on both sides), mortise locks, and multi-point security doors, which are standard installations across many Australian homes.
From a smart home perspective, the lock integrates with Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Samsung SmartThings, and Home Assistant. However, Matter is not supported. Networking requires a dedicated 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi band, as 5 GHz networks are unsupported. Direct Wi-Fi operation also draws heavy battery power from the CR123A lithium cells compared to locks operating over dedicated Zigbee or Z-Wave bridges.
August does not maintain an Australian manufacturer product page or direct regional distribution. August's published 1-year warranty explicitly restricts coverage to purchases and installations within the US and Canada. As a result, Australian buyers relying on local retailers or parallel importers must depend on statutory guarantees provided under Australian Consumer Law rather than a direct manufacturer warranty.
