The Nanoleaf Shapes Hexagons Starter Kit (model NL42-0005HX-9PK) consists of nine rigid, modular LED wall panels designed to create custom illuminated patterns. Despite occasional retail listings categorising it under smart lightstrips, these are flat, hexagonal panels measuring 20 cm by 23 cm that link together using rigid connectors. According to Nanoleaf, the system delivers up to 100 lumens per panel across 16 million colours and tunable white light from 1200K to 6500K. The package includes nine hexagon panels, a physical controller, mounting plates with adhesive tape, and a 42W power supply unit. It features touch-sensitive surfaces, real-time audio sync via an internal Rhythm music visualiser, and screen mirroring through the Nanoleaf Desktop App without requiring a paid subscription.
Who it suits
This kit suits users looking for decorative accent lighting and ambient displays rather than primary ceiling illumination. Nanoleaf states that panels can expand up to 500 units per controller, though the included 42W power supply caps out at 21 hexagon panels before needing additional power injection. It also suits cross-platform smart homes, as Nanoleaf confirms compatibility with Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, and Samsung SmartThings. Users running Home Assistant can also integrate the panels over local IP. However, households expecting native Matter device commissioning should note that while Nanoleaf states the Shapes act as a Thread Border Router, they do not commission directly into ecosystems via Matter.
Australian notes
Nanoleaf supplies Australian retail stock with a standard Type-I plug connected to a 100–240V AC power supply. For network setup, Nanoleaf notes that the panels operate exclusively on 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi (802.11 b/g/n); pairing will fail on dedicated 5 GHz networks or combined bands that cannot isolate 2.4 GHz traffic. In Australia, the kit carries a two-year manufacturer limited replacement warranty.
The panels use double-sided adhesive tape designed for flat, painted drywall. Nanoleaf's user manual states that this tape is unsuitable for brick, porous surfaces, wallpaper, textured plaster, or ceiling mounting. Renters should evaluate whether adhesive removal might cause paint damage, and check local tenancy agreements or state rental authority guidelines regarding wall fixings. Furthermore, the panels are not waterproof and are rated strictly for indoor, dry environments.
